Infant/Toddler Brain Development

The development of Infant/Toddler brains is one of the most interesting aspects of biological studies in our day. Children form their basic perceptions and habits in the earliest stages of their lives, and as such it makes an important field of study for scientists to look into. If scientists can find ways to better understand the development of the infants brain we can better understand social behavior and development treatments for brain malfunctions. In this article I will look at the early stages of infant brain development, and the effects these have on the child’s later advancement into adulthood.

To begin with infants have smaller brains from birth having a skull that is not fully formed but, light and malleable in order to allow it escape the womb without becoming stuck. As the child ages its skull begins to fuse and its brain begins to develop at a higher pace. From the embryonic stage to birth is rapid transformation, and from the newborn to the infantile stage is also a rapid development. Infant brains go through a wide range of changes as they begin to learn their basic habits and basic physical skills and abilities. Infants begin to walk and talk as well as more simple actions such as holding their heads up and grabbing things. These simple actions may seem easy but they require a lot of brain function and neuronal pattern formation for the infant’s young brain to begin the process of learning these skills.

As infants develop their environment begins to affect them in many ways. If the infant has a positive and healthy environment it will stimulate its growth and personality. This literally affects the brain in its developmental patterns as it shifts the focus of different parts of the brain to deal with the various issue of life that the infant is forced to deal with. In the early stages of life up to two years are some of the most formative in an infant’s life they set their basic thought patterns. These are initiated by their parent or guardian who teaches them how what their boundaries are and the basic skills that all people need.

So from birth and into adulthood the brain development of infants/toddlers affects their entire life laying the groundwork for their basic human abilities, and personality. The early periods of brain development are indeed the most important in a person’s life because of the enormous amount of changes and neural pattern formations that occur at this stage of life.
